Walk an ancient lava tunnel near Reykjavik on a guided, helmet-and-headlamp tour with standout geology and real darkness moments.

“It was cold, wet, interesting, informative and surprising. When the guide shut off all the lights and we shut all our lamps off it was awesome just being in complete, total darkness. Our hearing heightened and we were able to hear the dripping of all the water. Fantastic!”

Small-Group Ice Cave Tour from Jökulsárlón

8.Small-Group Ice Cave Tour from Jökulsárlón

★★★★★★★★★★5.0 · 265 reviews · 2 hours 30 minutes (approx.) · from $188

A guided small-group walk from Jökulsárlón onto Vatnajökull’s ice, then into a naturally changing ice cave on Fláajökull.

“Arrived at the check-in point and did not see the guide group. Ended up having to pay for phone data that day in order to get in contact with the tour group. Turns out they had emailed very early in the AM to say the tour would be delayed 30 minutes. Unfortunately other travelers in our group were not equipped for the experience which impacted our experience. We had to go to a closer cave due to improper footwear and athletic level of others. Sadly this is not something that you are able to plan ahead for and avoid. The cave was still stunning.”

From Reykjavik: Golden Circle and Glacier Ice Cave Tour

From Reykjavik: Golden Circle and Glacier Ice Cave Tour - Reykjavik pickup and the early-morning reality

9.Golden Circle and Glacier Ice Cave Tour

★★★★★★★★★★4.2 · 244 reviews · from $325

Golden Circle classics plus a Langjökull glacier snowmobile, with a man-made ice cave when conditions allow. Long, cold, worth it.

“The geysers at the geothermal area were amazing to see erupting; however, we would have preferred to spend less time in this area and more time at Thingviller National Park as the walk to the actual spot where the first Viking parliament was held is a bit of a hike and coming back up the hill is somewhat difficult to do within the time allotted. Snowmobiling on the glacier was out of this world!!! We were supposed to visit an ice cave after the snowmobile but for some reason that didn’t happen. All in all it was still well worth the money.Read more”

From Reykjavik: Into the Glacier Ice Cave Tour - Walking into the Langjökull Ice Tunnel: the main event

11.Into the Glacier Ice Cave Tour

★★★★★★★★★★4.4 · 175 reviews · 11 hours · from $304

Cruise to Langjökull glacier, ride a special truck, and walk through an ice tunnel of rare blue ice on this Reykjavik day tour.

“Really great trip. The super trucks were awesome. It was freezing cold on the glacier, but that's probably one of the coolest things I ever did. Magdalena was really nice and cool. Highly recommend. The only thing I would change - we were walking in the cave as a group of 30 people, that's way too many, smaller groups would have been much much better.”
